MYANMAR - STRUGGLING TO SURVIVE
Current reports from Myanmar highlight that almost 2 million people are struggling to survive in difficult and deteriorating conditions. The death toll could exceed 100,000. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been destroyed. People are drinking contaminated water and searching for food, while living in make-shift shelters exposed to the elements. Overcrowding of villages with unsanitary conditions is prevalent, and many children have been orphaned.
By God's grace, the EFCA is uniquely positioned to respond to this crisis. In partnership with the EFC of Myanmar, we have connections with church leaders and members in Yangon. We have already wired $5,000 being used to purchase supplies for distribution by our partners. A Myanmar leader has mobilized students to deliver supplies and help with rebuilding in the name of Christ. Here is his latest update:
Dear Friends,
Praise the Lord for allowed us to begin relief work in a community in Yangon, near our bible college and where we have outreach ministry with local church and Bible College's students. We distributed rice and others need for 36 families and help build 10 houses today. We work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with our students and young people from the church work together. Tomorrow we will be helping other community where we have outreach ministry in Yangon. We will go step by step to other communities in Yangon. Some place cannot be rebuild now due to muddy and still water in the places. Please pray for more to people to join us in relief work locally (man power). Thank you so much for your help and pray for our people
A great opportunity exists for the EFCA to play a critical role in meeting the needs of people, expressing the Great Commission and advancing the gospel. The greatest need currently is for funds to enable our ministry partners in Myanmar to respond.
EFCA TouchGlobal and ReachGlobal Action Steps
This week, a ReachGlobal assessment team from Southeast Asia will attempt to travel to Myanmar to meet with the local team, encourage them in their work, and assess needs and ministry opportunities.
On May 20 the ReachGlobal Assessment team will meet in Hong Kong with leaders of TouchGlobal Crisis Response, ReachGlobal, EFC Myanmar, and other potential partners to pray and plan a long term response strategy including steps to ensure effective ministry with transparency and accountability.
What can you do?
Pray for:
• Our in-country leaders to be led and protected by the Holy Spirit.
• An outpouring of God’s blessing to meet needs.
• People to be exposed to the compassion of Christ through the response of our national partners.
• Wisdom in our strategies that will direct our response to this crisis in the coming months.
Give
The greatest need continues to be for resources to meet immediate needs and sustain a long-term response. We have established the Myanmar Disaster Relief fund and are accepting donations.
A bulletin insert is available on the TouchGlobal web site summarizing information regarding the need, our response and how to give. Download the insert at http://www.touchglobal.org/myanmar/
We recognize that it is very important to ensure that donations are used strategically and with transparency and accountability. Therefore, we are seeking to build a coalition to effect a unified response. We pray that God's people would give generously enabling the love of Christ and the gospel to be spread in this land of oppression.
