Dear Praying Friends,
Let us update you on the situation here.
Tomorrow, Sunday 2 December, the nation will be voting on whether to amend the 1999 Constitution. Opposition members believe the proposed amendments would move the country farther to the left. In particular, it would seem that the head of state would be given more powers and that the right to private property would give way to public utility as determined by the state. Other freedoms and rights are seen as being threatened.
On Monday this week, the opposition shut down certain parts of Valencia and other key points in the state of Carabobo, by blocking certain key intersections. Light posts and traffic signals were torn down to form barricades (together with debris and burning tires). Because of Monday’s chaos, all elementary and secondary schools in Valencia, both public and private, were ordered closed for the entire week. Private and public universities have continued to operate, however. Tuesday was a clean-up day as the National Guard moved in and took over. Wednesday and following were fairly peaceful in Valencia, but Caracas has had rallies with some outbursts of violence.
We the Bells have several meetings and practices tonight at church and then a regular Sunday tomorrow, with Lord’s Supper, Sunday School and Worship. Some churches opted to cancel their services. Ours did not. We will use our best judgment, but plan to attend.
Appreciating your prayers,
Michael, Corinne, Morgan, Monica and Matthew
